GN BROTH (IP 2018)

GN Broth (IP 2018) is a selective enrichment medium used for the enrichment of Shigella from pharmaceutical products as per Indian Pharmacopoeia, IP 2018.

The formulation contains peptone to supply amino acids as well as other nitrogenous compounds needed for microbial growth. The inclusion of sodium citrate and sodium deoxycholate maintains the selective action of the medium, preventing the growth of Gram-positive bacteria as well as some Gram-negative bacteria, coliforms included. Phosphate salts act as buffers, sodium chloride allows osmotic control.

GN BROTH is employed as an enrichment phase prior to subculture on an appropriate selective solid medium, for example XLD Agar, to enable further isolation and identification of Shigella. This medium is particularly suitable for use in pharmaceutical microbiology laboratories conducting routine quality control analysis in accordance with the procedures specified in pharmacopoeias. Additional biochemical or other suitable confirmation testing should be carried out for definitive identification.

To facilitate ease of use and streamline workflow, GN Broth (IP 2018) is offered as a ready-to-use liquid medium in tubes. This pre-prepared format obviates need for media preparation and dispensing and lends itself to routine pharmaceutical microbiology testing.

GN Broth (IP 2018) is a selective enrichment medium suitable for the enrichment of Shigella from pharmaceutical products in accordance with the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP 2018). The formulation is designed to enhance the recovery of all species of Shigella and to inhibit the growth of most Gram-positive organisms, some Gram-negative competitors, and other contaminant flora. A digest of casein supplies amino acids and peptides, glucose supplies carbohydrate energy and selective agents inhibit non-target organisms. Sodium phosphate maintains buffering capacity and sodium chloride maintains osmotic equilibrium.

GN Broth (IP 2018) is available as a ready-to-use liquid medium in tubes suitable for routine pharmaceutical microbiology testing and isolation of Shigella on selective solid media.
