ENTEROBACTERIA ENRICHMENT BROTH, MOSSEL (USP/EP/BP/JP/IP)

EE Broth, Mossel is a selective enrichment medium for the isolation of Enterobacteriaceae from food, animal feed and related samples. It is particularly effective in resuscitating sub-lethally injured bacteria that may have been exposed to heat, steam, drying, or other food processing conditions. The medium has been formulated according to the harmonised requirements of the pharmacopoeias USP, BP, EP, JP, and IP, for the microbiological testing standard.
Its formulation is carefully balanced to select for the proliferation of bile-tolerant, Gram-negative, enteric bacteria while inhibiting other unwanted microorganisms. Pancreatic digestion of gelatin provides nitrogen and growth factors and glucose serves as a facile energy source for stimulation of damaged cells repair. Brilliant green and ox-bile are selective inhibitors of Gram-positive bacteria, thereby enhancing the selective enrichment of Enterobacteriaceae. Acids are neutralized by phosphate salts during incubation, this neutralization is believed to prevent the accumulation of acids which may have an inhibitory effect on the recovery of the bacteria. The substitution of glucose for lactose also enhances the isolation of lactose-negative, late lactose-fermenting, and anaerogenic Enterobacteriaceae that might otherwise be overlooked.
