The nutrient broth is a pre-enrichment medium recommended for maintaining microorganisms, cultivating fastidious organisms by enriching with serum or blood and also for purity checking prior to biochemical or serological testing. The media formulation was originally designed to be used in the Standard Method for an examination of water and wastewater but it may also be used for testing food, milk and dairy products. It is a general-purpose medium which supports the growth of a broad range of bacteria. However, with the addition of different biological fluids such as horse or sheep blood, serum, egg yolk, etc., they can also be used for cultivating Streptococci, pneumococci and other related fastidious organisms. Nutrient broth powder appears as a cream to yellow colored media in its dehydrated form.
