VIRAL TRANSPORT MEDIUM W/ GLASS BEADS

Viral Transport Medium with Glass Beads is designed for collecting and transporting clinical samples for virus, chlamydiae, mycoplasmas, or ureaplasmas from collection site to testing laboratory. The medium preserves viral viability and sustains the viruses in an active state, which can be used for isolation and laboratory examination. The flocked swab allows effective collection of the specimen and elution into the transport medium, and glass beads help to let go and disperse the patient material and viral particles from the swab.
The medium contains Hanks Balanced Salt Solution, modified and supplemented with bovine serum albumin, cysteine, gelatin, sucrose and glutamic acid. HEPES is a buffering agent and phenol red is a pH indicator. Vancomycin, amphotericin B and colistin inhibit growth of competing bacteria and yeasts during transportation.
The medium is isotonic and is designed to reduce toxicity to mammalian host cells. Sucrose is used as a cryoprotectant for the long-term storage of viruses and chlamydia in frozen specimens at -70 degrees C. This medium is also appropriate for the collection and transport of Coronavirus specimens.
