This is a balanced, semi-solid, non-nutritive medium intended to maintain the viability of microorganisms without its significant multiplication, thus the original microbial population remains representative of the collected sample.
The medium contains a mixture of selected inorganic salts that are osmotic and ionic stabilizers of the bacterial cell itself, and sodium thioglycollate, a strong reducing agent that reduces oxidative damage during transport. The semi-solid consistency securely holds the specimen and protects it during the handling and transportation because of the semi-solid nature of the medium.
