    Transport Medium Amies W/ Charcoal is a unique transport medium designed to maintain the viability of microorganisms in the collection or storage of clinical specimens. It’s formulated to maintain organisms with minimal growth to ensure samples are in suitable condition when they arrive at the lab for accurate microbiological results.
    The formulation is derived from the modified Amies transport medium with the addition of an inorganic phosphate buffer system to enhance specimen preservation compared to previously available transportation media. The addition of activated charcoal adsorbs free fatty acids and other toxic substances that may be released from the swab or specimen during transit. This protective mechanism seems to be of specific importance for sensitive organisms, for instance Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and has been shown to significantly enhance the survival of such organisms in transit. The balanced salts are for osmotic stabilization, and the sodium thioglycollate is for creating a reduced environment to protect the oxygen-sensitive bacteria from oxidative damage.
