Description
Thymine (5-Methyluracil) is off-white flakes with a characteristic odour and shows limited solubility in water while dissolving in alcohol. It is a pyrimidine nucleobase, being a methyl-substitution on uracil at the 5-position. This nitrogen-containing base is one of the biologically important factors in the structure of nucleic structure. It constitutes one of the four basic bases of the nucleic acid DNA, together with adenine, guanine, and cytosine, forming base pairs and acting as a carrier of genetic information. Thymine is also employed in vitro for study of chemical processes affecting DNA, such as radiation-induced radical formation, cross-linking reactions and derivatization. Its well-defined structure and biological relevance make it useful for work in molecular biology and nucleic acid chemistry.
Principle
Essential nucleobase used in studies related to DNA structure and reactions.
