SUDAN (III)

Sudan (III) is a reddish-brown powder and used as a stain dye for the detection of fats and lipids in biological and laboratory samples. Non-ionic lipophilic azo dyes such as Sudan dyes have high affinity for lipid-rich materials making it highly useful in histological and microscopic examinations. The stain is a standard tool for the demonstration of fat in faeces, urine, and tissue in the laboratory. Sudan (III)is further utilized in tissue ceroid and lipofuscin studies, blood-cell staining, and triglyceride visualization in frozen tissue sections. The selective staining of lipid-containing material enhances contrast and enables better microscopic interpretation. Beside the biological use, the dye is also employed for coloring waxes, oils, and spirit varnishes. Due to its dependable staining characteristics and versatile nature, Sudan (III) is still extensively utilized in pathology laboratories, research studies, and analytical procedures to detect lipids and to examine tissues.
