Soyabean Casein Digest Agar with 1% Glycerol, 0.5% Lecithin and 4% Polysorbate 80 is intended for the detection of microbial contamination on environmental surfaces, as well as for the evaluation of the efficacy of sanitation procedures. It is applicable for testing containers, instruments and surfaces, as well as water soluble cosmetics especially in situations where quaternary ammonium compounds or other disinfectants may remain after sanitization.
Casein enzyme hydrolysate and soyabean meal papaic digest are sources of nitrogenous material and other nutrients required for the growth of organisms. Sodium chloride maintains osmotic balance of cells. Lecithin and polysorbate 80 serve as neutralizers of the residual germicidal and disinfectant activity, enhancing the recovery of organisms from the surface tested.
Lecithin neutralizes quaternary ammonium compounds, while polysorbate 80 helps neutralize phenolic disinfectants and hexachlorophene. Together, these neutralizers also help inactivate residual ethanol. The formulation can therefore assist laboratories in recovering microorganisms that may otherwise remain inhibited by disinfectant residues during environmental monitoring. Glycerol is included as part of the formulation, while agar provides the solidifying matrix for colony development and enumeration.
