SALMONELLA SHIGELLA AGAR PLATE (SS AGAR PLATE)

Salmonella Shigella (SS) Agar Plate is a selective and differential culture medium for isolation and differentiation of Salmonella and Shigella species from pathological specimens, suspected food samples and other microbiological specimens. It is also recommended for microbial limit testing and allows effective differentiation between lactose fermenting and non-lactose fermenting enteric bacteria and thereby supports accurate microbial identification.
It contains beef extract and peptic digest of animal tissue, and therefore provides essential nitrogen, amino acids, vitamins and minerals for the growth of microorganisms. Lactose is the fermentable carbohydrate and bile salts, sodium citrate and brilliant green inhibit Gram-positive bacteria, most coliforms and swarming Proteus species, allowing for selective recovery of Salmonella. The production of hydrogen sulphide can be detected by the formation of characteristic black-centred colonies with sodium thiosulphate and iron salts. Neutral red acts as a pH indicator, differentiating lactose fermenters, which produce pink to red colonies, from non-lactose fermenters that appear colourless or transparent.
Its selective formulation and clear differential reactions provide reliable recovery and identification of enteric pathogens, making it a dependable medium for routine microbiological analysis and quality control.
