SABOURAUD DEXTROSE AGAR

Sabouraud Dextrose Agar is an acidic culture medium for the isolation, cultivation and maintenance of pathogenic and non-pathogenic fungi, yeasts and aciduric microorganism from clinical and non-clinical samples. The medium is also suitable for the isolation and enumeration of yeasts and moulds in environmental monitoring and assessment of microbial contamination in food, cosmetics and clinical specimens.
The pH is adjusted to approximately 5.6, creating conditions that favour fungal growth, particularly dermatophytes, while helping to inhibit bacterial growth present in clinical and other samples. When selective isolation of pathogenic fungi from specimens containing high levels of bacteria or other fungi is required, the medium can also be supplemented with antibiotics.
Mycological peptone provides nitrogenous compounds and other nutrients for microbial growth, and dextrose provides an energy source. The moderately high concentration of dextrose combined with the low pH promotes the growth of fungi and helps limit contaminating bacterial flora. Agar is the solidifying agent necessary for plate cultivation. Due to its wide range of applications, the medium enables routine mycological culture as well as recovery of fungi and instrumentation of the environment.
