Product Code TRM 622
Description
Sabouraud Chloramphenicol Agar is a selective fungal culture medium for the isolation and cultivation of yeasts and moulds including parasitic fungi of skin and scalp lesions. The selective nature of the medium enables the recovery of fungi from clinical samples with mixed bacterial flora.
Casein enzymic hydrolysate and peptic digest of animal tissue supply nitrogen, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and other growth factors necessary for the cultivation of microbes. Dextrose is the main source of carbon and energy for fungal growth. Chloramphenicol suppresses a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, minimizing bacterial interference in the isolation of fungi.
The medium has a low pH, which favors fungal growth and suppresses the growth of contaminating bacteria originating from clinical samples. This combination of nutritional availability, acidic pH, and antibiotic selectivity confers the applicability of the medium for routine mycological work. For specimens expected to contain significant contamination, simultaneous inoculation onto a selective fungal medium can support more effective recovery of the target fungi. Agar is the solidifying agent utilized for the formation and observation of colonies.
Principle
Optimized for selective cultivation of yeasts and moulds, particularly dermatophytic fungi associated with skin and scalp lesions, while chloramphenicol helps suppress bacterial growth.
