Rapid Coliform Kit is designed for the rapid detection of coliform bacteria and the confirmation of Escherichia coli in drinking water through enzyme substrate technology. The kit provides a simple procedure with reliable results that can be used to monitor water quality on a regular basis from laboratory, field and community programmes.
The kit includes anhydrous Rapid Coliform Broth and a sterile PET bottle which allows an easy sample preparation. This medium provides essential nutrients for bacteria and contains a chromogenic (X-gal) and a fluorogenic (MUG) substrates for reliable identification of the bacteria. This enzyme changes broth from yellow to greenish-blue in the presence of coliforms, which is a visual indication of contamination. In the presence of E.coli, this enzyme cleaves the MUG substrate releasing a fluorescent compound that glows bluish under UV light (366 nm). Other coliforms are not fluorescent, so this is a convenient way to separate E. coli from other coliforms.
Its easy testing process and simple interpretation make the kit well suited for routine surveillance of drinking water, environmental water sources, and systems in rural areas. It offers a rapid, economical and dependable means for identification of microbiological contamination in a shorter time than the traditional procedures.
