POTATO DEXTROSE AGAR (USP/EP/BP/JP/IP)

Potato Dextrose Agar is a general-purpose fungal culture medium for the isolation, growth and enumeration of yeasts and moulds from clinical and dairy products and from food samples. It is also the media of choice for fungal growth recommended by the USP, BP, EP and JP and is included by the USP as one of the recommended media for microbial enumeration testing of non-sterile pharmaceutical products.
Nutrients and energy essential for the growth of yeasts and moulds are provided by potato infusion and dextrose. The relatively low pH promotes fungal growth and inhibits the accompanying bacterial flora. Agar provides the solidifying matrix for plate-based culture and colony development.
The medium will also support sporulation and routine fungal enumeration and can be used for stock culture maintenance of some dermatophytes. It also helps in differentiating the common dermatophytes on the basis of pigment production. This makes Potato Dextrose Agar suitable for use in food, dairy, pharmaceutical and clinical microbiology laboratories for the reliable recovery and enumeration of fungi.
