Product Code TMPH 008
Description
Potato Dextrose Agar Plate is a nutrient rich general purpose culture medium for the cultivation and subculture of fungi as per the harmonised methods of USP, EP, BP and JP. It is widely used for recovery and enumeration of yeasts and moulds and is recommended by American Public Health Association (APHA) and FDA for Microbiological examination of foods and dairy products. The medium is also useful for detection of heat resistant moulds in thermally processed fruits and fruit products and for the determination of microbial limits.
The formulation contains potato infusion and dextrose (glucose), which provide a rich source of nutrients and energy to support vigorous fungal growth. Its low pH naturally prevents growth of many accompanying bacteria and thus allows selective recovery of fungi without the use of other inhibitors. Agar provides a solid surface to grow colonies and observe them.
It is a good medium for sporulation of moulds and pigment production. It is useful for maintenance of stock cultures and for differentiation of dermatophytes by characteristic pigmentation. The balanced formulation provides uniform fungal growth and reliable performance for routine mycological testing and quality control.
