PEPTONE WATER 0.1%

Peptone Water 0.1% is a simple, non-selective medium used mainly as a diluent for microbial enumeration procedures. It is also appropriate for the growth of non-fastidious microorganisms and can be used for the study of carbohydrate fermentation and indole production. Its simple formulation is suitable for the preparation of microbial suspensions and has the least interference with subsequent testing.
The medium contains peptone which provides the necessary nitrogen and carbon sources for the microbial growth. The peptone in this formulation is high in tryptophan and hence the medium can be used to demonstrate indole production with Kovac’ s reagent. Therefore, the appropriate biochemical procedure permits the assessment of microorganisms able to produce indole from tryptophan.
Peptone Water can also be supplemented with specific carbohydrates and appropriate pH indicators such as bromocresol purple, phenol red, or bromothymol blue for carbohydrate fermentation studies. These additions allow changes associated with carbohydrate utilization to be observed through indicator reactions.
Peptone Water 0.1% is a simple nutrient formulation useful as a routine diluent and sample preparation medium prior to microbial enumeration. The tryptophan-enriched formula offers greater flexibility for routine biochemical testing and characterisation of non-fastidious microorganisms.
