Soyabean Casein Digest Agar with Tween 80, Soya Lecithin & Beta-Lactamase Mixture is a selective culture media for the detection and quantification of microorganisms in containers, equipment, environmental surfaces, and water-miscible cosmetic formulations. It is also appropriate for monitoring the environment of cleanroom facilities in the production of beta-lactam antibiotics, where it allows for the isolation of resistant microorganisms.
The casein is hydrolysed by using enzymes and papaic digest of soyabeans meal is added, which acts as nitrogenous source along with other nutrients for the growth of microorganisms. Osmotic balance of the cells is maintained by the sodium chloride. Soya lecithin and Tween 80 inactivate the residual disinfectant, the former acting on the quaternary ammonium compounds and the latter inactivating phenolic disinfectants and hexachlorophene. Together, they also help neutralize ethanol. Beta-Lactamase Mixture inactivates beta-lactam antibiotics like cephalosporins and penems, allowing resistant microorganisms to grow without interference of the antibiotics.
The plates are gamma irradiated in their packaging to reduce the microbial contamination of the medium as well as the plate and packaging materials. A color change from orange to red on the irradiation indicator strip verifies that the irradiation process has been carried out. This formulation allows consistent recovery of micro-organisms and reliable results when used for monitoring the environment and routine microbiological quality control.
