NUTRIENT AGAR PLATE

Nutrient Agar Plate is a general-purpose, non-selective culture medium formulated for the cultivation and enumeration of a wide variety of microorganisms, particularly non-fastidious bacteria. Due to its simplicity, it is also useful for culturing and monitoring microbial purity prior to other biochemical or serological analysis.
The medium contains peptone, beef extract and yeast extract which supply the nitrogenous compounds, carbon sources, vitamins and other necessary trace elements for the growth of bacteria. Sodium chloride keeps the medium’s osmotic pressure balanced and helps in maintaining microbial stability. The uncomplicated nutritional composition provides sufficient growth without the excessive nutrient availability that may encourage rapid overgrowth.
Nutrient Agar is also good for demonstrating and teaching simple Microbiological methods where it is appreciated that cultures can be kept for a long time at room temperature. The medium may be enriched with animal fluids like horse or sheep blood, serum or egg yolk for the growth of related fastidious organisms and for the expression of additional microbial features.
The wide range and easy preparation of nutrient agar has made it a popular general-purpose media for the examination of samples in routine microbiology. It permits subsequent testing of isolates and offers a reliable solid surface for microbial growth, observation, maintenance, and enumeration if necessary.
