NESSLER’S REAGENT (For Detection of Ammonia and Ammonium Salt)

Product Code TR 060

  • Description

Nessler’s Reagent is used to detect ammonia and ammonium salts in analytical and microbiological testing. It can help identify ammonia production from microbial metabolism, including the degradation of urea by urease producing organisms.
In microbiological applications, bacteria with the ability of urease production can decompose urea and produce ammonia. Alternatively, this ammonia production can be detected by using Nessler’s Reagent. It can also be used to identify ammonia produced by the degradation of compounds such as L-arginine.
The reagent is suitable for the detection of ammonia released in biochemistry reactions and can be used to identify microorganisms based on their metabolic activity. The product shall be colourless to light yellow in appearance. The product shall pass the test for ammonia.
Reaction conditions should be controlled carefully when Nessler’s Reagent is used for quantitative estimation. The reaction time between ammonia and the reagent can influence the accuracy of the measured concentration.
Some substances can also interfere with the Nessler method. These include chlorine, chloride, hardness-causing compounds such as magnesium ions, and ferrous ions. Appropriate sample preparation and established analytical procedures should therefore be followed to obtain dependable results.
