  • Description

    Mueller Hinton Agar is used for the cultivation of Neisseria species and for the determination of antimicrobial susceptibility of microorganisms. It was originally described by Mueller and Hinton for the primary isolation of Neisseria but later used for antibiotic susceptibility testing by disc diffusion method. The medium has become a standard choice for antimicrobial susceptibility testing and its performance is aligned with CLSI requirements with applications also recognised by WHO, FDA and EUCAST.
    Its suitability for susceptibility testing is related to good reproducibility from batch to batch, low levels of inhibitors of sulphonamides, trimethoprim and tetracyclines and the ability to support the growth of many nonfastidious bacterial pathogens. Its established performance and extensive testing data further contribute to its use in routine antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
    Beef extract and casein acid hydrolysate supply nitrogen,carbon, amino acids, vitamins and other essential nutrients. Starch also facilitates the removal of toxic metabolites generated during the growth of the microbes. The medium is supplemented with defined amounts of thymine/thymidine, calcium, and magnesium to promote uniform inhibition zone formation in the disc diffusion assay. Agar is the solidifying medium necessary for surface seeding and quantifying antimicrobial activity.
