Description
Hippuric Acid is an organic carboxylic acid and a member of acyl glycines compounds. It is a white crystalline powder and is found naturally in urine as a metabolic product. It is produced in the body by conjugation of benzoic acid with glycine. Phenol compounds found in foods such as fruit juices, tea and wine are first converted to benzoic acid and then to hippuric acid before excretion. Because of this metabolic pathway, it is important in the study of biochemical and physiological processes. Its structure also enables participation in reactions with derivatives of the amino acid, as well as with other small bioactive molecules. It is used in cell biology, chemical biology, and nutrition-related studies. It also serves as a useful component in peptide synthesis and other chemical synthesis applications where controlled organic reactions are required.
