Product Code TMP 002
Description
Cetrimide Agar Plate is designed for the selective isolation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from pharmaceutical products, clinical specimens, and environmental samples. Its formulation suppresses the growth of the majority of accompanying organisms, therefore allowing more accurate recovery of the target organism. These properties ensure that cetrimide agar is a suitable medium for routine quality control and contamination monitoring and for clinical microbiology when rapid identification of P. aeruginosa is essential.
The medium selectivity is achieved by cetrimide, a quaternary ammonium compound that inhibits the majority of bacteria, but allows P. aeruginosa to flourish. The pancreatic digest of gelatin provides the nutrients necessary for healthy bacterial growth and the agar provides a solid surface for the development of colonies. Magnesium chloride and potassium sulphate promote the production of pyocyanin, the characteristic blue-green pigment associated with P. aeruginosa. The organism may also give its characteristic grape-like odour, which is an additional aid to presumptive identification. In contrast, many non-target organisms such as Escherichia coli are effectively suppressed.
Cetrimide Agar Plate is a dependable choice for laboratories that need selective recovery of P. aeruginosa, to help improve confidence in microbial identification in pharmaceutical, clinical and environmental testing applications.
