CARBOXYMETHYL CELLULOSE

Carboxymethyl Cellulose is a modified cellulose derivative obtained as a white to off-white crystalline powder. It has carboxymethyl groups attached to the cellulose structure which enhance the interaction of the compound with water. When dispersed, it gives a smooth and viscous solution. This characteristic aids in moisture retention and friction reduction. Due to this property, it is employed as a lubricant in the preparation of ophthalmic solutions. It helps relieve irritation and discomfort caused by dryness in the eyes by forming a protective and hydrating layer. Due to its texture and stability, it can be used in formulations which require a certain controlled viscosity and soothing effect.
