Description
A reliable tracking dye is necessary to keep track of sample migration during electrophoresis, and Bromophenol Blue is one of the most widely used options for this application. This pale brown to pink crystalline powder serves as a color marker and as an acid-base indicator in laboratory analysis. In agarose gel electrophoresis of DNA and RNA, Bromophenol Blue passes through the gel at approximately the same rate as 300-500 bp DNA fragments, and allows researchers to visually monitor the progress of separation. It is usually in the same position as the buffer front in protein polyacrylamide gels and is equally useful in protein studies. Structurally related to phenolphthalein, the dye also performs effectively as a pH indicator. Other than electrophoresis, it is used in analytical chemistry as a laboratory dye and visual indicator. Because of its usefulness in molecular biology and everyday analytical techniques, Bromophenol Blue is a key reagent for research and diagnostic laboratories.
