BRAIN HEART INFUSION BROTH

Brain Heart Infusion Broth is a highly nutritive medium for the cultivation of fastidious and non-fastidious microorganisms including aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, yeasts and moulds from clinical and non-clinical specimens. This medium is supplemented with nutrients to support the growth of a wide range of microorganisms and the preparation of inocula for antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
The medium is a modification of the original formulation of Rosenow and offers a well-buffered environment supporting microbial growth. Brain Heart Infusion Broth is especially useful for growing anaerobic bacteria, yeasts and moulds. It may be used for the isolation and cultivation of Histoplasma capsulatum and other fungi when enriched with 10% defibrinated sheep blood. Gentamicin and/or chloramphenicol may be added when selective isolation of fungi is required.
Proteose peptone, calf brain infusion powder, and BHI broth ingredients serve as sources of carbon, nitrogen, amino acids, vitamins and other essential growth factors. Dextrose is an energy source, disodium phosphate acts as a buffer and sodium chloride maintains the osmotic balance.
