BRAIN HEART INFUSION AGAR PLATE

Brain Heart Infusion Agar Plate is a highly enriched culture medium for the cultivation of fastidious pathogenic bacteria, yeasts and moulds. Being rich in nutritional composition it is an ideal option when microorganisms need to be grown under enhanced conditions. It is commonly used for the primary isolation of aerobic bacteria from clinical specimens and can be adapted for the isolation of fungi by the addition of appropriate antimicrobial supplements.
Versatility is one of the main advantages of this medium. Sterile defibrinated blood may be added to help the growth of more fastidious organisms or antibiotics like chloramphenicol, streptomycin or gentamicin to prevent the growth of bacterial contaminants during isolation of fungi. Cycloheximide and chloramphenicol combinations are commonly used to isolate selectively pathogenic fungi, facilitating improved recovery from mixed samples. The brain and heart infusions, rich in nutrients, contain amino acids, peptides, vitamins and growth factors which promote the luxuriant development of colonies of a wide range of microorganisms.
