Product Code TMP 034
Description
Blood Agar with Gentamicin Plate is a nutrient rich selective culture medium for the isolation of Streptococcus pneumoniae. The incorporation of gentamicin enhances the selective isolation of the organism by suppressing the growth of other competing Gram-positive bacteria and thus increasing the isolation of the target organism from mixed microbial flora. It enables the growth of beta-haemolytic streptococci, other streptococci, Bacteroides, Clostridia and yeasts and is useful in identifying gentamicin-resistant Gram-negative bacilli when available.
The formulation contains liver extract and yeast extract which supply vitamins, carbohydrates and organic nitrogen compounds with other essential nutrients for microbial growth. Proteose peptone contains additional growth factors and sodium chloride maintains osmotic balance and electrolyte stability. The sheep blood contributes additional growth factors to the medium and allows for detection of haemolytic activity, which is an important characteristic used in differentiation of microbes. Gentamicin increases selectivity by inhibiting susceptible Gram-positive organisms, but does not affect recovery of Streptococcus pneumoniae.
A reliable recovery and clear haemolytic differentiation are achieved by its enriched composition and selective performance. It is also a reliable medium for microbiological identification and quality control testing.
Principle
Supports the selective isolation of Streptococcus pneumoniae while enhancing recovery and haemolytic differentiation in mixed microbial cultures.
