Description
Azur A is a basic cationic dye supplied as a greenish-black powder with intense coloring properties. It is well known for its high binding affinity to sulphated compounds, enabling its application in the detection and measurement of polysaccharides and similar substances. The dye has been used for staining polyacrylamide gels in the analysis of bovine lung heparin digestion by heparinase I. It is utilized to quantify the sulphated group content of polysaccharides with a clear and stable colour reaction that enables easy observation and determination. In addition, the combination of Azur A with silver staining techniques has been utilized for the quantification of glycosaminoglycans in agarose gels. The cationic property contributes to the formation of well-defined staining patterns and higher contrast. The powder is readily dispersed on appropriate conditions, so the staining solution can be easily prepared and uniformly applied.
