ALTERNATIVE THIOGLYCOLLATE MEDIUM (NIH THIOGLYCOLLATE MEDIUM) (as per USP)

Product Code TSM 301

  • Description

Some biological products pose a particular problem to sterility testing due to the turbidity or viscosity of product formulations preventing an interpretation of test results. NIH Thioglycollate Medium was developed as an appropriate medium for the detection of contamination in samples that cannot be easily analyzed in the standard Fluid Thioglycollate Medium.
The formulation supports the growth of a broad range of?many types of organisms and it also maintains a reduced oxygen environment which aids in the recovery of aerobic and anaerobic organisms. Tryptone and yeast extract serve as sources of amino acids, peptides, vitamins, and growth factors, and dextrose provides a source of energy. Sodium thioglycollate and L-cystine will act as reducing agents to lower the reduction-oxidation potential of the medium thus promoting growth of oxygen sensitive organisms, and also neutralize inhibitory effect of some preservatives. By omitting agar and resazurin, NIH Thioglycollate Medium remains particularly suitable for sterility testing of turbid and viscous biological products where clear and reliable evaluation is required.
