Description
MacConkey Agar without Crystal Violet, with 0.15% Bile Salts and Sodium Chloride, is a selective and differential medium for the isolation and differentiation of enteric pathogens that ferment or do not ferment lactose. It is suitable for microbiological examination of clinical, food and water samples and is also recommended for microbial limit testing. The formulation favours the growth of Gram-negative bacilli and bile salts inhibit most Gram-positive bacteria.
Peptone and proteose peptone provide the carbon, nitrogen, amino acids and other nutrients required for microbial growth. Lactose fermenters produce acid and appear as red or pink colonies. Salmonella and Shigella are non-lactose fermenters and usually do not change the colour of the medium. They are colourless and transparent colonies. The absence of crystal violet makes this formulation less selective than conventional MacConkey Agar and supports specific applications involving Gram-negative bacilli. It can also help suppress swarming by most Proteus species.
Principle
Designed for selective isolation and differentiation of enteric bacteria, with clear distinction between lactose-fermenting and non-lactose-fermenting strains while allowing growth of Gram-negative organisms.
