VIRAL TRANSPORT MEDIUM

Viral Transport Medium is intended for collection and transport of clinical specimens containing viruses, chlamydiae, mycoplasmas or ureaplasmas from the collection site to the testing laboratory. It preserves viability of the virus and keeps the virus in a state which is suitable for later isolation and examination. The flocked swab is designed for effective collection and elution of the specimen into the transport medium.
The formulation contains Hanks Balanced Salt Solution with added bovine serum albumin, cysteine, gelatin, sucrose and glutamic acid to provide a suitable environment for transported specimens. HEPES is a buffer and phenol red is a pH indicator. Vancomycin, amphotericin B and colistin are used to help inhibit the proliferation of competing bacteria and yeasts during transit.
The medium is isotonic and the toxic effect upon the mammalian host cells is kept to a minimum. Sucrose acts as a cryoprotectant, which preserves viruses and chlamydia during freezing at -70°C for long term storage of specimens. This medium is also suitable for the collection and transport of Coronavirus samples.
