VIOLET RED BILE GLUCOSE AGAR PLATE

Product Code TMPH 023

  • Description

Violet Red Bile Glucose Agar Plate is a selective culture medium for the detection, enumeration and subculturing of bile tolerant Enterobacteriaceae as per the harmonised methods of USP, EP, BP, JP and IP. It is recommended for microbial limit testing of non-sterile products and pharmaceutical preparations. Gives reliable recovery of bile-tolerant Gram-negative bacteria.
It contains a pancreatic digest of gelatin and yeast extract which acts as a source of nitrogenous compounds, amino acids, vitamins and other nutrients required for growth of bacteria. Glucose serves as the fermentable carbohydrate, while neutral red functions as the pH indicator to detect acid production during glucose fermentation.
Glucose fermenting organisms like Escherichia coli and Salmonella produce pink colonies, often with a characteristic bile precipitate around the colonies, because of acid-induced precipitation of bile salts. Bile salts and crystal violet are selective agents that suppress many gram-positive bacteria, promoting the recovery of Enterobacteriaceae. Sodium chloride maintains the osmotic pressure and agar provides a solid base for colony growth.
Its selective formulation and differential reactions allow for the reliable recovery and enumeration of bile-tolerant enteric bacteria in routine microbiological quality control and microbial limit testing.
