Description
MacConkey Agar Plate W/O CV, NaCl and W/ 0.5% Sodium Taurocholate is a modified version of the classic MacConkey medium designed for the selective isolation and differentiation of Enterobacteriaceae and other enteric Gram-negative bacilli. It is widely used in clinical, food, water, dairy and pharmaceutical microbiology laboratories where accurate recovery of enteric organisms is essential.
Unlike the original formulation, this medium excludes crystal violet and sodium chloride but contains 0.5% sodium taurocholate as a selective agent. This change kills most Gram positive bacteria but allows supporting the growth of Gram-negative organisms. This medium also allows for differentiation of bacteria on the basis of their ability to ferment lactose, thus allowing easy interpretation of colonies. Lactose fermenters form pink to red colonies, often with a zone of bile precipitation surrounding them due to acid production. In contrast, non-lactose fermenters such as Salmonella and Shigella produce colourless, transparent colonies without changing the appearance of the medium. Yersinia enterocolitica can also be found in the form of small colonies not fermenting lactose after incubation at low temperatures.
MacConkey Agar Plate is recommended for microbiological examination of clinical specimens, food products, water samples, dairy products, and pharmaceutical preparations requiring selective recovery of enteric Gram-negative bacteria.
