Product Code TMF 001
Description
Buffered Peptone Water is a non-selective pre-enrichment medium designed to allow the recovery of damaged and stressed cells of microorganisms prior to selective isolation. It is the most common medium applied in primary isolation of Salmonella from food, environmental, and similar samples, enabling regaining of viable cells when bacterial cells have been injured by processing, storage, or sample preparation.
The substrate is a balanced nutritional field that permits cell repair without compromising microbial viability. Peptone caters the needs of bacteria for resuscitation and initial growth by providing a suitable source of nitrogen, carbon, amino acids, vitamins and other required nutrients. A carefully designed phosphate buffer system maintains a constant pH during incubation to protect acid sensitive strains from acid stress, and osmotic balance is maintained by sodium chloride to ensure optimal cell function.
Buffered Peptone Water serves as a critical pre-enrichment step before transfer to selective enrichment media, allowing low numbers of injured Salmonella cells to recover and multiply. This significantly improves the chances of success in detecting them in subsequent microbiological assays. Widely employed in food safety testing, pharmaceutical quality control, veterinary diagnostics, and environmental analysis, this medium enables consistent pathogen recovery and accurate microbiological results in accordance with standard test methods.
