R2A BROTH

R2A Broth is a low-nutrient culture medium designed to enhance the recovery of stressed, slow growing, and chlorine resistant bacteria typical of potable and treated water systems. In contrast to the traditional nutrient dense medium, it enables growth of organisms that do not grow in routine laboratory conditions and it is a critical component for heterotrophic plate count analysis and monitoring of water quality.
Its well balanced formulation contains casein acid hydrolysate, biopeptone and yeast extract as sources of essential amino acids, vitamins and other growth factors necessary for bacterial metabolism. Dextrose as the source of energy, and the soluble starch neutralizes the inhibitory substance and toxic metabolite which may interfere in the recovery of microorganism. Sodium pyruvate provides additional nutritional support, phosphate buffers maintain pH stability, and magnesium sulphate supplies essential ions that promote healthy bacterial growth.
R2A Broth is the standard medium employed in environmental, municipal, pharmaceutical, and food testing laboratories for monitoring potable water quality and evaluating treated water systems. It is ideal for growth of aerobic and facultatively anaerobic organisms under prolonged incubation and thus helps labs obtain a more representational assessment of microbial populations present in low-nutrient water environments.
