Product Code 737
Description
Potassium Ferricyanide, Extra Pure is a coordination compound containing iron bound to cyanide groups. It is a bright red crystalline powder and dissolves slowly in water to give a yellowish solution. The compound contains ferricyanide ions that readily participate in oxidation-reduction reactions. During these reactions, it can receive electrons from ferrous ions turning them into ferric ions. This activity results in characteristic color changes or precipitates. These reactions make the compound a useful indicator for detecting ferrous ions. In medical laboratories, it is used to detect iron in biological tissues. It is also used in industrial analysis in the detection of free metal ions on the surface of steel or iron that lead to rusting.
