Product Code TR 074
Description
Sodium Thiosulphate, 0.1N is a standardized reducing agent commonly used as a titrant in iodometric analysis. It supports the volumetric estimation of various oxidizing substances in laboratory testing.
The solution can be used to determine the concentration of compounds such as hydrogen peroxide. It also supports the estimation of chlorine content in commercial bleaching powder and water.
In iodometric titration potassium iodide reacts with a strong oxidising agent in an acidic medium liberating iodine. The liberated iodine is titrated with standard sodium thiosulphate solution. Quantitative analysis depends on the fixed reaction between iodine and sodium thiosulphate.
The product has a defined normality range of 0.0990-0.1005 and will provide reliable titrimetric measurements if handled under suitable conditions.
In the presence of acids, sodium thiosulphate can become unstable. At low pH, oxidation of iodide by atmospheric oxygen and release of iodine can also happen. These reactions can cause errors in titration. Hence, proper handling and controlled testing conditions are important to obtain correct results.
Principle
Used as a standardized titrant in iodometric analysis for estimating oxidizing compounds, hydrogen peroxide, chlorine, and related substances.
