PEPTONE WATER (as per BIS)

Peptone Water is a simple and widely applied media in microbiology. Despite its uncomplicated composition, it plays an important role in routine laboratory testing by serving as both a general-purpose growth medium and a foundation for various biochemical tests. Since it allows growth of many non-fastidious bacteria, it can be considered as the suitable media for preliminary microbiological examinations.
The animal tissue digest is a source of amino acids, peptides, and other nutrients required by bacteria for growth. Sodium chloride is added to maintain the osmotic balance and to provide a stable environment for growth. Peptone Water is a standard medium for detection of indole production, a key feature in determining bacteria like Escherichia coli. It may also be used as a basal medium in carbohydrate fermentation tests, where a suitable sugar is added as a source of energy to study the microbial metabolism activity. This versatility enables it to be used as a valuable tool in routine microbiological and biochemical test assays.

It is a general purpose growth medium which can also be used as the base of carbohydrate fermentation media.
