MUELLER HINTON AGAR PLATE W/ 5% SHEEP BLOOD

Mueller Hinton Agar Plate with 5% Sheep Blood is an enriched culture medium designed for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Streptococcus species. It is especially recommended for disc diffusion susceptibility testing of Streptococcus pneumoniae with selected antimicrobial agents. It enables standardised antimicrobial testing by providing a uniform environment for measuring inhibition zones and interpreting susceptibility results in accordance with CLSI standards.
It is prepared from beef extract and casein acid hydrolysate which supplies essential nitrogen, carbon, amino acids, vitamins and other nutrients essential for the growth of microorganisms. Starch helps in the absorption of toxic metabolites which can interfere with microbial development. It is formulated with low levels of thymine/thymidine and optimised concentrations of calcium and magnesium to give reproducible zones of inhibition in testing for antimicrobial susceptibility. 5% sheep blood enhances the growth of S. pneumoniae and provides better pigment production and sharply defined haemolytic reactions.
The Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion technique utilizes a standardized microbial inoculum and a uniform concentration of antimicrobial on a particular disc surface. After incubation, the diameter of the inhibition zone is measured and interpreted according to the related established CLSI criteria. Its defined formulation and known performance characteristics enable consistent results in determining susceptibility to antimicrobials.
