  • Description

    MIU Medium (Motility-Indole-Urease Medium) is a selective, differential medium utilized for the detection of bacterial motility, indole production and urease activity, and can be used to test for all three in a single tube. MIU medium can be used to identifiy Enterobacteriaceae family members and other clinically important organisms rapidly and easily in clinical, pharmaecutical, food and research laboratories.

    The blend includes casein enzymic hydrolysate, sodium chloride, dextrose, agar and phenol red to ensure consistent growth and facile identification of micro-organisms. Casein enzymic hydrolysate provides amino acids and other nitrogen compounds while sodium chloride sustains osmotic integrity. Dextrose is present to provide a fermentable carbohydrate and phenol red is a pH indicator which detects changes due to urease activity.

    This medium allows the three essential biochemical parameters to be tested for at the same time. Motility, is assessed by irregular, diffuse growth radiating from the stab line, while non-motile test organisms will display growth restricted to the stab line. Urease positive test organisms hydrolyse the urea to ammonia, which neutralises the medium, giving a pink-red colour. Positive test for indole production involves the formation of a red complex when the indole produced by the bacteria during the digestion of tryptophan react with the Kovac’s reagent.

    MIU Medium facilitates rapid and specific identification of bacteria including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Proteus mirabilis and Salmonella Typhimurium. The convenient, ready-to-use format reduces labor and preparation time, improves laboratory productivity and provides reproducibility in everyday microbiological analysis and quality control testing.
