MacCONKEY AGAR W/ SODIUM TAUROCHOLATE W/O CV & NaCl

Product Code TRM 378

  • Description

MacConkey Agar with Sodium Taurocholate, without Crystal Violet and Sodium Chloride, is a selective and differential media designed for isolation and differentiation of Enterobacteriaceae and other enteric Gram-negative bacilli from clinical, food and water samples. Additionally, it can be used for bacterial testing of food, dairy, water and pharmaceutical products.
The peptic digest of animal tissue provides amino acids and polypeptides while the components of the infusion provide vitamins, coenzymes, minerals and other nitrogenous nutrients. Lactose is the fermentable carbohydrate and acid production is detected by a visible color change with neutral red. The selective action is due to sodium taurocholate which inhibits most Gram-positive microorganisms. The absence of crystal violet allows growth of organisms like Staphylococcus, Enterococcus and Mycobacterium species.
The absence of sodium chloride in the composition establishes a low electrolyte environment, which contributes to the inhibition of swarming by Proteus species. Lactose fermenters produce red or pink colonies, which may be surrounded by a precipitated bile zone, but non-lactose fermenters like Salmonella, and Shigella are usually colorless and transparent.
