Description
EDTA 0.1M (0.2N) Volumetric Solution is a standard solution used in analytical chemistry for volumetric titrations. It is of particular use in complexometric titration in which EDTA reacts with metal ions to give stable chelate complexes.
The method is widely used for determination of the water hardness which is mainly due to the dissolved calcium and magnesium ions. EDTA is a hexadentate ligand that can coordinate metal ions at several sites to form stable complexes. This property makes EDTA suitable for the quantitative determination of metal ions in aqueous samples.
EDTA is poorly soluble in water, but its disodium salt is readily and completely soluble. The disodium salt in this form is suitable for the preparation of aqueous titrant solutions for analytical procedures. Compared with some conventional methods, EDTA complexometric titration offers good accuracy, convenience, and relatively rapid analysis.
The prepared solution is intended for controlled laboratory titration procedures and should be used according to the relevant analytical method. As with other volumetric techniques, accurate measurement and proper endpoint detection are important for reliable results.
The method consumes a measurable quantity of the sample and is therefore considered destructive. Results may also be affected by human error, particularly during measurement, titrant handling, and endpoint determination.
Principle
Supports complexometric titration and water hardness determination by forming stable chelate complexes with metal ions.
