CHROMOGENIC UTI AGAR *

Product Code TM 1199

  • Description

Chromogenic UTI Agar is a specialized culture medium designed for the identification and confirmation of microorganisms responsible for urinary tract infections. Chromogenic UTI Agar is a significant tool in clinical microbiology. It allows rapid identification of uropathogens by distinct colony colour on the plate with minimal further biochemical testing. Bladder infections are the most common form of urinary tract infection (UTI) and are generally caused by the same organisms including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Klebsiella species, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterococcus faecalis.

Chromogenic UTI Agar is based on extensive research and specifically developed for the growth and identification of these clinically significant organisms. Specific chromogenic substrates are incorporated into the medium which when hydrolysed by microbial enzymes give rise to distinct color products assisting in the identification. Chromogenic UTI Agar is based on a principle of enzyme-substrate reactions. Activity of ß-glucosididase on substrate in the media results in Enterococci blue colour colonies and activity of ß-D-galactosididase by E. coli forms pink colour colonies. Coliforms are purple due to cleavage of several substrates, and Proteus, Morganella, and Providencia are brown as a result of tryptophan deaminase activity. These distinct visual distinctions enable Chromogenic UTI Agar to be very effective in routine diagnostic workflows.

Chromogenic UTI Agar includes peptone special, in addition to providing a means for differentiation, to supply essential nutrients such as nitrogen, carbon, amino acids and vitamins for microbial growth. The medium can be supplemented with antibiotics to increase selectivity, particularly when dealing with hospital-acquired infections. Widely used with urine, clinical, food, and water samples, Chromogenic UTI Agar is an easy to interpret and reliable system that enables accurate detection. Chromogenic UTI Agar is a key product in the modern microbiological laboratory.
