    Anthrone (9,10, Dihydro-9-oxoanthracene) belongs to the anthracene class of compounds. It is a tricyclic aromatic ketone which is a 9,10-dihydroanthracene with an oxo substituent at the C-9 position.
    The compound is a pale yellow crystalline powder and is soluble in most organic solvents, which is favourable to their use in analytical methods. The melting point is 154-156 °C and the assay is not less than 97% , which provides reliable results. Anthrone is commonly used for cellulose estimation and colorimetric carbohydrate analysis.
