UNIVERSAL TRANSPORT MEDIUM

Universal Transport Medium is a ready-to-use transport system for the collection and transport of clinical specimens containing viruses, chlamydiae, mycoplasmas or ureaplasmas from the collection site to the testing laboratory. The system is applicable for the transportation of specimens for subsequent isolation and examination in the laboratory. The system enables the maintenance of viability of viral agents during transport. The flocked swab allows specimen material to be efficiently collected and eluted into the transport medium.
The medium is prepared from modified Hanks Balanced Salt Solution and supplemented with bovine serum albumin, cysteine, gelatin, sucrose and glutamic acid to provide suitable conditions for specimen preservation. HEPES acts as a buffer and phenol red serves as a pH indicator. Vancomycin, amphotericin B and colistin help to prevent the growth of competing bacteria and yeasts during transport. The isotonic formulation is designed to reduce the adverse effects on mammalian cells. Sucrose is a cryoprotectant and helps preserve viruses and chlamydiae when specimens are to be frozen at about -70°C for long-term storage. This medium is also recommended for collection and transportation of Coronavirus specimens.
