Transport Swab W/ Cary-Blair Medium is a non-nutritive, semi-solid transport medium formulated to keep organisms present in clinical specimens viable from the time of collection until they are processed in the laboratory. Its well-balanced composition of the product inhibits the overgrowth of microbes in transit and at the same time preserves the organisms needed for culture and identification.
Due to its low nutrient content, the medium supports bacteria survival with substantial growth, thereby reducing the possibility of modified microbial populations. A low oxidation-reduction potential, which is maintained by sodium thioglycollate, is beneficial to oxygen sensitive bacteria, and the pH alkalinity enhances the viability of enteric pathogens, mainly Vibrio species. Balance salt content maintains osmotic stability and helps preserve bacterial cell integrity throughout transportation.
