SABOURAUD DEXTROSE AGAR (as per USP/EP/JP/BP)

Product Code TMH 104

  • Description

Sabouraud Dextrose Agar is Carliers modification of the formulation described by Sabouraud for the cultivation of fungi (yeasts, molds), and aciduric microorganisms. Sabouraud Dextrose Agar is recommended for microbiological examination of non-sterile products in accordance with the harmonized method of USP/EP/BP/JP. This medium is also employed in microbial limit tests in pharmaceutical testing, food, cosmetics, and clinical specimens.

Sabouraud Dextrose Agar is a selective medium used for the isolation and cultivation of fungi, such as yeasts and molds from both clinical as well as non clinical materials. It is especially useful to identify those fungi that are the causes of skin infection and in testing microbial contamination of food, cosmetics and environmental samples. Sabouraud Dextrose agar is also the recommended reference medium for recovery of fungi. This makes this medium very important in microbiology laboratories. The Sabouraud Dextrose Agar is of high quality, and it is suitable for balanced composition. It contains peptone which provides necessary nitrogenous compounds, while the amino acid and vitamin are supplied for the growth of the micro-organism. Dextrose supplies the required energy and stimulates rapid growth of the fungi. The main advantage of the SDA medium is that the growth of fungi is optimum in the presence of high content of dextrose and slightly acidic pH while the growth of the unnecessary bacteria is inhibited. Agar is included as a solidifying agent to allow for easy visualization of colonies. Sabouraud Dextrose Agar is a standard medium in laboratories working with dermatological samples like skin scales and in quality control testing of food and cosmetic products. The medium allows for the growth of a wide range of fungal species and is useful for routine analysis and research. Effective in detecting contamination and monitoring product safety in many industries. Preparation of Sabouraud Dextrose Agar is easy and convenient. The medium is dissolved in distilled water, mixed well, heated until dissolved, then sterilized by autoclaving. The solution is cooled and poured into sterile petri dishes and allowed to set to a clear to slightly opalescent gel of light amber color. This consistency promotes appropriate colony growth and easy observation. Sabouraud Dextrose Agar is subjected to rigorous quality control to provide dependable performance. It promotes homogeneous fungal growth usually within a few days, when incubated under the recommended conditions. Sabouraud Dextrose Agar is still the best medium for fungal cultivation and microbial analysis in the lab because of its selectivity and reliable results.
