POTATO DEXTROSE AGAR PLATE

Potato Dextrose Agar Plate is a nutrient rich medium intended to promote the growth of yeasts and moulds and to suppress the growth of many contaminating bacteria. It is widely recommended by APHA and FDA for fungal enumeration in food and dairy products as well as pharmaceutical microbial limit testing. It is particularly useful in the identification of fungi and in the maintenance of stock cultures because of its ability to promote abundant sporulation and characteristic pigment production.
This medium is crucial not only for routine fungal isolation but also in quality control and research applications. It is often used to detect heat-resistant moulds in thermally processed fruits and fruit products in which fungal contamination can affect product quality and shelf life. The formulation contained potato infusion and dextrose which provides a rich source of nutrients and energy for the fungal growth. Its naturally low pH provides favourable conditions for yeasts and moulds, and it diminishes interference from accompanying bacterial flora.
