Product Code TSP 004G
Description
Potato Dextrose Agar is a nutritionally rich, general-purpose medium used for the subculture and cultivation of fungi in accordance with harmonized USP/EP/BP/JP methods. It is also recommended by APHA and FDA for the enumeration and testing of yeasts and moulds in food and dairy products. The medium can support the detection and enumeration of heat-resistant moulds in thermally processed fruits and fruit products.
Potato infusion and dextrose provide nutrients and energy that promote the growth of yeasts and moulds. Its relatively low pH helps partially inhibit accompanying bacterial flora, supporting fungal recovery from samples. The medium also encourages mould sporulation and pigment production, making it useful for maintaining stock cultures of certain dermatophytes and differentiating typical dermatophyte varieties based on pigment characteristics.
Potato Dextrose Agar is additionally recommended for microbial limit testing in pharmaceutical applications. Agar provides the solidifying matrix required for plate-based cultivation. Its combination of nutritional support and favourable conditions for fungal development makes it suitable for routine fungal subculture, enumeration, maintenance and related mycological applications.
