LURIA BERTANI BROTH

Luria Bertani Broth, Miller is a nutrient-rich medium used for the cultivation and maintenance of recombinant strains of Escherichia coli and for routine cultivation of microorganisms that do not require specialized nutritional conditions. The formulation has double the sodium chloride concentration of the original Lennox medium, thus giving it a higher salt concentration suitable for the cultivation applications intended.
The medium is especially useful for the maintenance of pure cultures of recombinant E. coli strains. Strains derived from E. coli K-12 may not be able to synthesise vitamin B and may undergo further modifications that produce auxotrophic strains. A nutritionally supportive medium is important for the growth of such strains.
Casein enzymic hydrolysate provides peptides and peptones to support microbial growth while yeast extract provides B-complex vitamins and other growth factors. Sodium Chloride provides sodium ions which are essential for membrane transport and helps to maintain the osmotic balance of the medium.
